About our Honorees: 2017 River Champions

L.A. City Councilmember José Huizar

CCS honors L.A. City Councilmember José Huizar for his dedication to the environment for people and nature throughout Los Angeles. His impressive environmental record includes creating 100 acres of new open space and parkland in Los Angeles, approving two of the largest solar projects in the country, and leading Los Angeles in its historic decision to become the largest city in the nation to ban single-use plastic bags.

Councilmember Huizar was pivotal in expanding the City’s recycling efforts, in transitioning the City of Los Angeles to cleaner, renewable energy, and in working to make the City coal-free by 2025.

Councilmember Huizar has been identified by the LA Business Journal as one of 25 people in the Los Angeles area that “stand out for their potential to shape lives” and by Hispanic Business Magazine as one of the “100 most influential Hispanics” in the United States.

Councilmember Huizar is currently the Chair of the Planning and Land Use Management Committee and chaired the City’s Energy & Environment Committee in 2012 and 2013.

The Water Foundation

Community Conservation Solutions is proud to honor the Water Foundation for its leadership, investment and presence in Los Angeles, which is changing the way we address water management in L.A. County and is essential to revitalizing the L.A. River and rivers throughout the county.

The Water Foundation is a strategic philanthropy that seeks to transform the way water is managed in California and the West. It has developed strong partnerships in Los Angeles to position the L.A. region to become a global leader in urban water management approaches that reduce water pollution and augment local water supplies. The foundation’s investments and leadership have helped us to integrate win-win solutions across various agencies, political jurisdictions and community organizations.

The Water Foundation’s support has helped CCS to advance the ‘Green Solutions’ decision-making tool for selecting nature-based projects that transform stormwater into new water supplies while reducing greenhouse gases.

The Water Foundation strives to improve the long-term availability of water for cities, farms and the environment, and is an advocate for better regional and statewide policies.  The Foundation’s ground-breaking work leading to the passage of California’s historic Sustainable Groundwater Management Act in 2014 demonstrates the foundation’s effectiveness.

The Water Foundation was launched as an initiative of Resources Legacy Fund in 2011. It partners with funders including S.D. Bechtel, Jr. Foundation, William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, James Irvine Foundation, the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, the Pisces Foundation, and the Walton Family Foundation.

About the L.A. River Greenway Trail Project

Event Organizer

The L.A. River Greenway Trail Project is located between Whitsett Avenue and Coldwater Canyon Avenue in Studio City, CA.

The L.A. River Greenway Trail will bridge the gap in existing river trail segments to construct a half-mile walking trail with over 4,000 native trees, shrubs and plants, creating a badly-needed natural oasis in the San Fernando Valley. Amenities include a Native Habitat Walk and River Viewing Area, shaded seating, a People and Pet drinking fountain and the beautiful hand-wrought Entry Gate and River Story Fence Panels, which bring the river's rich and natural human history to life through interpretive metal artwork.
